Blockupy Frankfurt

Blockupy 2013 in Frankfurt, May 30th to June 1st 2013

Blockupy is back: In May 2012, activists gathered in the banking area of Frankfurt to protest against the austerity politics of the German government and the Troika (EU, ECB, IMF). From May 30th to June 1st 2013 we will return for European action days in the heart of the European authoritarian crisis regime in Frankfurt/Main.

At the headquarters of the European Central Bank (ECB), we will send a powerful signal of solidarity with all those affected by the curent politiics of austerity and cuts.

As a symbol of struggle against austerity rule we will organise mass blockades of the ECB in Frankfurt on May 31st. We will move on to actions in a “second wave” in the late morning to other actors and profiteers of the crisis. Or aim on May 31st is to visibly disturb the usual business of the ECB as well as other actors of the crisis regime.

On June 1st, the European action day, we call for a large international demonstration, together with many thousands of people from all over Europe.

The action camp at Rebstock will serve as a political and social meeting point for Blockupy. All activists and affinity groups should arrive there latest on Thursday, May 30th at 7 p.m., when we will come together for the big preparatory assembly.

In 70 cities in 10 countries: United against the Troika!

united against troika
The Portuguese coalition People United Against the Troika, which called for massive protests across Europe against the troika and its austerity policies, issued a press release yesterday announcing the progress of its call. Mobilizations are underway in 70 cities in 10 countries in Europe, with Blockupy playing a key role on this day: “As in Frankfurt Blockupy will protest in front of the European Central Bank Headquarters, in Lisbon the “Que Se Lixe a Troika” will protest in front of the national IMF headquarters, in Madrid, “Mareas Ciudadanas” will protest in front of the national European Commission headquarters, and in dozens more cities all around each of the ten countries protests will take place in search of a future without austerity-ridden policies and the ideological fanaticism which is destroying the most important thing in Europe: its peoples.”

Warm up for Blockupy Zeil – Benetton blockupied in Italy!

block benettonFollowing the recent events in Bangladesh, where 1,127 people died in the collapse of a textile factory, the main store of the multinational company Benetton has been blocked in many cities in the Northeast of Italy. In Venice, Vicenza, Padua, Trieste and Trento outlets of the multinational were closed. Banners above windows where clothes are usually on display, photos and signs showed the true face of Benetton. The crisis actor was marked colorfully. For more information: Global Project

Protests across Europe parallel to action days in Frankfurt

Press statement of the federal Blockupy coalition
Frankfurt am Main, May 15, 2013

This Wednesday is the second anniversary of the occupation of the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. May 15, 2011 (15M) marks the beginning of a European movement against the austerity policies of the troika and governments, against unemployment, housing emergencies and cuts in social welfare. The federal coalition Blockupy Frankfurt understands itself as part of this international movement. Many active persons from other countries are expected to join the action days on May 31 and June 1 in Frankfurt. Groups and organizations in Italy, Greece, France, Belgium, Austria and elsewhere are mobilizing to Frankfurt. Furthermore, demonstrations and protests are planned parallel to Blockupy in many European capitals and cities.

The call of the international preparation meeting for Blockupy states: “There is no possible compromise with the power that is shaping and driving the governance of crisis in Europe. The only way out we see is a direct, diffuse, widespread and autonomous social opposition that rises up from grassroots, that not only speaks up furiously against that governance but that also fiercely builds effective conflicts and shared and common alternatives at all levels – from the local to the European. [...] We want our life back, our dignity back. We want our future back, since life without a future is worth nothing. [...] So we’ll be in Frankfurt from May 30th to June 1st, taking part in the action days to block the ECB.”

The call from Lisbon for decentral protests on June 1 running with the motto “People United Against the Troika” also puts it in clear terms: “Each one of us, in each country, in each city, in each house, with our own specificities, feels directly the measures that annihilate the rights conquered throughout the decades, measures which aggravate unemployment, privatize everything that can make a profit and repel the countries’ sovereignties under the propaganda of “external help”. It is urgent that we join forces to fight-off this attack. It is extremely necessary to join our forces to fight against this attack. From the north to the south of Europe: To the streets against austerity!“

This past weekend demonstrations in 50 Spanish cities marked the 15M anniversary. Cristina Asensi from Attac Spain: “The continuing protests show that the austerity policies implemented by the troika and the Spanish government have caused a deep crisis of legitimacy. The people are not willing to accept the destruction of their democratic and social rights in the name of failed economic policies.”

The Blockupy coalition is made up of activists of various emancipatory groups and organizations, including the Interventionist Left, Attac, Occupy Frankfurt, labor unions, youth and student organizations like Linksjugend Solid and the Green Youth, the Unemployment Forum of Germany, the party “Die.Linke”, the network Peace Cooperative, the coalition “Ums Ganze” and the regional coalition NoTroika.

AG Camp: Blockupy Camping Guide

campinfoflyer_150Camp anticapitalista during the Blockupy action days 2013

Blockupy Camping Guide

Let‘s Camp! Let‘s Camp! This year, Blockupy will have it´s own campsite. After what we´ve experienced in 2012, we wanted to create a safe place for discussion, preparation and relaxation after action. This camp is the political and social “meeting-point” for Blockupy 2013.

A camp like this one is not package holiday. It´s a “do it yourself” camp that can only work if everybody helps and cares about one another. That´s why we call on all activists to pick up “camp-jobs”. These would primarily include camp setup and take down, people’s kitchen, protection and night watch. You can enlist for those “camp jobs” at the “shift list” that will be available at the campsite. You might as well enlist beforehand via: helfen@notroika.org

The camp is depending on the support of organisations and groups that want to create a “Barrio” at the campsite. Please contact us as soon as possible, giving us information about how many tents you will bring and how much space you will be needing: camp@notroika.org

+++Antirepression working group and its tasks

The actions in Frankfurt in May 2012 were coupled with a state of emergency that nobody expected in their scope. All actions, discussions, stage programs planned by the Blockupy coalition were banned. And Frankfurt became the stage for police exercises for emergency situations in a way that seemed absurd to most. Frankfurt was declared a “demonstration-free zone” for the duration of the action days with creation of a “security zone” surrounding the European Central Bank, the imposition of bans on the city center that later proved to be illegal for hundreds of demonstrators and mass detainments of persons who assembled in the city despite the bans. With more or less success, however, people continued going to the streets and taking the squares for some time.
