The Mythic Dungeon International, or MDI, is the primary competitive event for dungeon runners. It is a tournament where the best teams in the world race to finish dungeons as fast as possible. This page explains what the MDI is and how you can learn from these professional players.
What is the MDI?
In the MDI, teams of five players compete on a special tournament server. Every player has the best gear, the best enchants, and the best items. The only thing that matters is player skill, coordination, and speed. The teams run the same dungeons that you see in the game, but at a much higher difficulty level. The team that finishes the dungeon with the fastest time wins the match.
Why Should You Watch the MDI?
Even if you do not plan to join a tournament team, watching the MDI is the best way to improve your own play. Professional players use tricks that the average player never sees. By watching their streams, you can learn:
- Optimal Routes: See exactly which enemies to pull and which ones to skip.
- Boss Positioning: Learn where to stand to make healing and damage easier for your team.
- Cooldown Management: Watch how the pros use their big spells to handle large groups of enemies at once.
- Class Synergies: See how different classes work together to control the dungeon environment.
Key Rules of the Tournament
The MDI uses a “best of three” or “best of five” format. Teams are given a “key” for a specific dungeon, and they must finish it within the time limit. If a team dies, they lose valuable seconds. If they fail to finish within the time limit, they lose the map.
How to Improve Like a Pro
You can apply the strategies you see in the MDI to your own Mythic Plus runs:
- Watch for “Pulls”: Look at how the tank gathers enemies. Do they group them up for area-of-effect damage? Do they use line-of-sight to bring ranged enemies into a melee pile?
- Focus on Kicks: Pay attention to how many times the pros interrupt spells. You will notice that almost every important enemy spell is stopped before it goes off.
- Use Your Items: The pros use every tool available, including profession items, engineering gadgets, and special food buffs.
- Practice Coordination: The MDI is won by communication. If you want to get faster, use voice chat with your friends and call out your cooldowns.
Learning from MDI Data
After each tournament, the statistics for which classes were used the most are published. If you want to know which class is the strongest for your role, look at the MDI team lists. If every top team is bringing a specific Mage or Rogue, it is usually because that class has a set of abilities that makes the dungeon much easier to finish.
